BIO | JOYCE GUY

J. Guy - General Hospital, ABC.jpg

Joyce Guy is an acclaimed actress, playwright, filmmaker and choreographer—a not so common creative hyphenate across stage and screen. The Hampton University graduate was a member of the pioneering DC Black Rep, and has performed at the Kennedy Center, the Mark Taper Forum, the Los Angeles Women’s Shakespeare Company, and Boston Court Pasadena.

In addition to ensemble projects at the Boston Court Pasadena, Joyce has written and performed her solo work there, as well as at: The Fountain Theater; Highways Performance Space; Los Angeles Theatre Center (LATC); UCLA; 2100 Square Feet; The L.A. Festival; A.S.K. Theater Projects; the Dance Place in Washington, D.C.; New York City's historic St. Mark's Church-in-the-Bowery; and The L.A. Women's Theatre Festival, of which she is a co-founder.

She has choreographed theatre classics and future classics alike. At the Noise Within Theatre (ANW), her projects included: Lorraine Hansberry's ground-breaking A Raisin in the Sun; Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing; and a slate of iconic August Wilson plays—The Piano Lesson, Gem of the Ocean and Seven Guitars. She was also the choreographer for Choir Boy by Tony nominee (and Moonlight Oscar winner) Tarell Alvin McCraney at Dezart Performs and Can I Touch It? at Rogue Machine Theatre.

In addition, Joyce won both the 2023 LA Drama Critics Circle and the LA Theatre Bite Awards in Choreography for ANW’s Much Ado About Nothing., as well as winning the NAACP Theatre Award for Best Choreography Local for Les Blancs at the Rogue Machine Theatre. This year, she was the movement consultant for Regional Tony Award winner Pasadena Playhouse's revival of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play,Topdog/Underdog by Suzan-Lori Parks.

Among her over 100 feature and TV multi-genre credits are film and TV-movie/miniseries roles that include major releases, such as Moneyball (Sony Pictures), Clickbait (Netflix) and The Santa Clause (Disney).  While her guest-starring, recurring character and main cast series TV credits include projects on broadcast, cable and streaming networks, such as: Animal Kingdom (TNT); the Bosch franchise (Amazon Prime Video); Criminal Minds (CBS); Found (NBC); How To Get Away With Murder (ABC); DC’s Legends of Tomorrow (The CW); Kidding (Showtime); The Mysterious Benedict Society (Disney+); and This Is Us (NBC), just to name a few. And in a time honored daytime acting tradition followed by the likes of Morgan Freeman, Julianne Moore, Michael B. Jordan, Meg Ryan, etc., Joyce has been a recurring fan fav on Emmy-winning General Hospital (also Demi Moore's first daytime drama).

Though she has laudable on-camera credits, Joyce also has behind-the-camera credits, including being the director-producer of Dancing Like Home (available on Amazon Prime Video), a documentary about dance from Senegal, West Africa. She's also the co-chair of the Black Association of Documentary Filmmakers West (BADWest), a collective of Black documentary filmmakers based in Los Angeles (visit www.badwest.org for future events and screenings).

Joyce's latest film role is in the current Columbia PIctures release, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey with Oscar nominees, Colin Farrell and Margot Robbie. Meanwhile, her next project as a choreographer is for another iconic August Wilson play, Joe Turner’s Come and Gone at Pasadena's A Noise Within Theatre, opening in October 2025...
